Negative thoughts are bad for your health!  Hardly groundbreaking news is it.  So why do we allow ourselves to be at the mercy of how we feel when in fact how we feel is dictated to an extent by the way we think?  Isn’t being negative supposed to use up more energy or am I thinking of the frowning and smiling muscle use comparison?

I have a friend who is a counsellor.  She gave me some great advice once.  Don’t ignore negative thoughts, admit them and learn.  Move on and turn those negative thoughts into positive ones.

Instead of developing negative thoughts about people, places or things you are unable to do, try turning them into something positive.  Look for the things that make you smile, things you can do, don’t be afraid of challenges … compliment people out loud and make someone’s day simply by being nice.  Don’t use words like ‘can’t’ and try to stop yourself when you’re about to criticise someone or whine.  Easy?

It’s a training thing and one that takes lots of practice.  Sounds like hard work I said.

Can is really be as simple as choosing to be one or the other or is it more than that?  Personality?  Circumstances?  What is it that motivates us all?
